The work generally consists of the following:
•removal of trees and grubbing to prepare the site for excavation;
•the installation of large logs in the creek downstream of the dam as sediment traps to capture sediment and create steelhead spawning habitat, some of which must be moved carefully into place using traditional logging techniques such as block and tackle since some areas are too steep for vehicle access;
•the installation of a creek by-pass system for creek dewatering to facilitate construction;
•the excavation, transportation, and disposal at a local landfill of approximately 10,000 cubic yards (CY) of earthen dam material which may contain naturally occurring asbestos;
•the excavation, transportation, disposal and grading of approximately 12,000 CY of entrapped creek sediments at an adjacent privately owned vineyard or, alternatively, disposal at a local landfill;
•traffic control to safely move soil hauling trucks in and out of the site onto a narrow, winding road;
•the construction of a rip rap-stabilized channel in the dam excavation area; and
•restoration of the stream channel habitat upstream of the earthen dam with cut logs and branches and revegetation of impacted areas.
